The other night I decided to go with some friends to what has become one of my favorite places to eat when I am in Montana….. with caution! The Edgar Bar Steakhouse, 105 Elwell Street, Edgar, Montana 59025. The names says steakhouse, it is in fact a neighborhood bar that serves great food with a focus on steaks.
Edgar Bar was the first place that I had a great meal when I came to Billings, as anyone knows a good meal is not easy to find in Billings, Montana. My contractor, Shane had suggested it and as a life long Montanan I felt safe and of course I was not disappointed. Trying to find ‘great eats’ in this part of Montana borders on almost impossible, as bad as trying to get a “Car Wash.” All these yahoos want to do is a “detail” and that is because they can try and rip you off by charging $150-$300 dollars for what should have been a car wash! Back to eating, we decided to go again last night, and it was as good as it gets again, BUT, they are serving a “Salad” that frankly looked as if it was sitting on the side of the road for a few days. It was pale in color and had pieces that were just rotten lettuce, just black and slimy. This means someone in kitchen land chose to ignore and serve it up on this little pathetic plate…. Too bad! Food like this could get someone very sick and get this place closed down, even my waitress who was very nice seemed to have missed it. Further, I ordered the “Clams,” ( I ordered clams in Billings, Montana….. not the brightest idea) $17.00 and it was just stupid, little tiny clams and the ‘meat’ was almost microscopic, tweezers should be provided in an attempt to get these tiny little pieces into your mouth. WORSE yet, more than half the shells were empty. Pretty good broth however, it needed some butter to finish it. I liked the broth, should call it a clam soup. Had to ask for bread to soak up this broth, some odd reason they don’t serve any bread. I was told bread is only served with soup, hell this is close to soup as I could possibly get. The bread was hot and fresh when it was brought to the table. No restaurant to date has ever given me a nice piece of crusty French bread to sop up the broth or stew.
The Oswald T-Bone was as good as a T-Bone can get ($50.00), incredibly good and not cheap either! The Edgar Rib Eye, that too, is a great choice, ( $37.50 for a 14 oz ). You have GOT TO GET RID OF THAT NASTY SALAD THAT IS BEING DUMPED ON THE TABLE pretending to be a salad. Either do it right and get some decent greens and stop worrying about costs. Mushroom burger was the best ($16.00), I loved it! Do Not Get Me Wrong Here, this is a great place to eat and the prices too have gone up. That is fine, as I don’t mind paying, but don’t serve rotten lettuce on my plate.
Mariah and Anna were great, the servers here are also the best, very accommodating and friendly. The other Gorilla sitting in the room is this, the drinks are weak, (once again the focus is on the profits not my comfort when it comes to drinks) we had to order a side shot upon realizing this place pours a measured shot…. and not a generous one with the booze. Once again, when I see little things at a well established restaurant I get concerned that I am going to stop in one day and it will be gone. Again, I will be back, love the food, just skip the salad and enjoy the clam soup! I left a $50.00 dollar tip and reminded Anna that I was being very generous! This was a GOOD experience.
