Dinner at Polo Lounge

Polo Lounge at Beverly Hills Hotel

One of my favorite places to dine when I am in town is the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel. For me the place is easy, it is close and always has a feel of peace and quiet. Unless you are there during an academy award event, then it full of ‘pretenders’ and a few stars and of course the ‘hanger onners’. Michael Trope and I often eat dinner together sometimes just the two of us and other times we might have a family member or two join us, Michael and I try and get together once or twice a month. The choices of where we eat vary with what either one of us feel like eating. And the laughs during dinner is really what getting together is about for the two of us. After all we both work in a really funny business, surrounded by a cast of characters some of which are lawyers and of course there are the clients, ahhh the wonderful clients that assist in making these evenings possible.

One of our favorite places is the Polo Lounge, the dining room is always nicely lit and there is a great view of the patio, it is almost always just perfect. Michael and I like to dine early as it is less crowded and the ‘chatter’ is less, and that works for me just fine. Michael decided on the ‘wild salmon’ as they were out of the ‘friendly’ salmon that would have been less costly. And who cares, we are eating at one of the most famous restaurants in the world and you get to pay for that experience!

Lamb Chops at the Polo Lounge Beverly Hills Hotel

I had the lamb chops, as I don’t like to eat meat, and they were cooked to perfection just a little pink and beyond delicious. Many eaters of lamb like their lamb ‘rare’, not me, I never want any blood on my plate. When I see too much blood when I am eating it brings me back to my days working as an embalmer….. those were fun times, just not memories at dinner.

Michael and I often will have the shrimp cocktail, it too is presented in such a way that is nicely chilled and always flavorful. It is a unique presentation. For $25.00 dollars a piece it should include a ticket to go and watch the shrimp being harvested. Again, if you can’t do it right, go and get a ‘McFish’ at the local Mc D’s. I passed on the desert as I am trying to lose a few pounds and in saying that if you get a chance the berry cobbler never ever disappoints and it does come with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

The total for the evening was $235.44 plus a $50.00 dollar tip, the tip is always important, the staff at the Polo Lounge truly aim to please. Everyone working the room are always very cool and nonchalant as they perform the duties of presenting an incredible meal and that tip makes it known that you appreciate the great service.

As we were exiting the hotel I asked Michael if he had his valet ticket, he looked at me and said, “ I don’t need one “……nice, I thought, as I stood waiting for my Escalade to be retrieved. Mr. Trope did not have that issue, his car was parked right in the motor court. Another great evening at the Beverly Hills Hotel, after all it is Beverly Hills!!!

John J Nazarian’s Report on Levitt & Quinn 31st Annual Awards dinner!

Last Friday night, September 21, 2012 I attended the Levitt & Quinn 31st Annual Awards dinner, the award, Humanitarian Service Award was being presented to someone that I have immense respect for. This year’s recipient, The Honorable Thomas Trent Lewis, when you review what Judge Lewis has done in his life as well as his career, this was no surprise. 28 years practicing law, and the certifications, and the president of this and the president of that, and those accolades go on and on. The event was held at the Luxe Hotel on Sunset Blvd.

You know what hit me immediately, was that Judge Lewis is a family man first, I will go a little further and say that he is ‘blessed’.. Judge Lewis is blessed to have not one, but both of his parents sitting with him at his table last night. Several members of his family were present and to keep his privacy and that of his family, that is all that I will say. What always amazes me is that when you meet the wives (most often) and sometimes the husbands who support and keep the ship on course you immediately understand why some climb to the levels they do. Judge Lewis presented the audience with a speech that was typical, very entertaining, very focused and the best part, it came from his heart. (If you were there you would have understood….if you were not… too bad.) Further, you missed an incredible evening with an incredible man, Judge Trent Lewis!

Mike Feuer, Assembly member, 42 District presented the award to Judge Lewis, he too had words that came from within and not so much from a pre-written speech. Describing Judge Lewis as a “Lawyer’s Lawyer“ and a “Judge’s Judge“. Judge Lewis and Judge Gordon I am convinced, if given the chance would and could fix California’s broken court system. Just look at what Judge Gordon & Judge Lewis have done in the last few years to the Los Angeles Superior Court…..it has to be good, we have received several complaints from DIVORCE lawyers, whining. I could be on to something, ‘Martin & Lewis’ – ‘Gordon & Lewis’, do not think this through too much, just trust ‘Johnfucious‘ on this.

The silent auction was fun too, I ended up with 6 dozen bagels and a very nice coffee maker, thanks to Rick Flam of the Law Offices of Flam & Flam, thanks Rick, great advice! Rick and Carole were present and for me it is always great to hear about there grand child. I also did a bid on a hand made ‘Frigate’ as in BOAT and won that bid. Judge Christine Byrd chuckled as I was trying to get the boat to my Escalade, she made several comments actually. Judge Byrd has become one of our ‘favs’ at Desperateexes.com and showed up looking fabulous…nice to see we have another judge in town with a sense of humor. Talking about humor, ‘The Rock Star of Judges’, my good friend Ken Black, Ret. L.A. Superior Court was also present and some had to wonder what the two of us were laughing about, when you are with Ken Black, the humor, “Rocks“.

Another judge we consider a friend first and also happens to be a judge, Judge Amy Pellman was present looking great and tanned. Judge Pellman now sits in Children’s Court aka Dependency Court, I heard several in passing telling Judge Pellman that they wish she was back in DIVORCE court. (don’t ever try to outrun Pellman, when not making critical decisions from the bench, she is quite and athlete) Judge Marmaro was present and we spoke briefly, it was nice to see him off the bench and being able to relax, DIVORCE court is not a ‘cake walk’. And after spending 8 hours in Judge Marmaro’s court last week, it was great to see him smiling and enjoying himself. (review my comments of ‘The Shower’)

After all was said and done it was a great evening of visiting with people that Nazarian and Associates has worked with for years, Joe Mannis, Lisa Helfend Meyer, (was that another new handbag?) Ron Brot, (see above for a great photo of Ron with his gorgeous date doing some shopping) Anne Slusser, Judy Bogen, Bob Cohen (with his wonderful wife), Mark Gross, Felicia Meyers, Dana Lowy, Michael Trope, James Durant, Soo Kim, (complaining that someone stole her olive oil) Angela Harris, Adam Lipsic (his lovely wife was home with the couple’s bundle of joy), and of course Cary Stockman with another one of our favs’ Law Office of Judith Forman. We may have missed a few of you, no worries you will eventually make it on DESPERATEEXES.com real soon.

For those of you who we ‘don’t work with’, no worries, you won’t be on anytime soon unless you screw up, and THEN, you will memorialized on DESPERATEEXES.com after all, without you we, there would be no DESPERATEEXES.com

Cadillac VIP Service Almost Drove Me to Range Rover

It has been 20 years since I have driven a Cadillac, as you all know I love Rolls Royce and Bentley Motor Cars. I also love SUVs and nice ones, so I thought Escalade, ESV and a Platinum Edition…perfect! The following is my experience in making my purchase of a 2012 and the BULLSHIT that Cadillac calls “VIP Service.” And the guy in charge of it is none other than Tony Fusciardi, District Manager of Cadillac for this part of California…LMAO, if this guy calls and you know it is him, DON’T ANSWER THE PHONE! Here is my story!

The first time I visited a Keyes Dealership it appeared that Howard Keyes and Howard Tenenbaum had just purchased it and some of the prior “dead wood” was still present in the form of sales staff, the worst! Now let me tell you about Keyes Woodland Hills Buick GMC Cadillac! Things are very different now and it is so much better, much better. Hovik Khachekian is the man in charge of the service department and is a delight to deal with, always engaging, always dressed well and does what he says he is going to do. Hovik could end up being a General Manager I predict, he has the touch and wisdom and knows customer service. Hmmm maybe Cadillac Motor Division should make Mr. Khachekian the “District Manager”? Sam is one of the service writers and he too is a nice fellow to deal with when your car is in need of service. Howard Tenenbaum is one of the owners and is always just a phone call away, this is a huge conglomerate of dealerships (stores) if you will. As you can see when you visit Keyes Woodland Hills Buick GMC Cadillac to buy a car this place is not like it once was and I like it…you know, for me to say “I like something” is a big deal. Not easy to make John J. Nazarian “happy.”

Hovik, Dennis and John at Keyes

Hovik, Dennis and John at Keyes

Back to my decision, one evening I call Howard and ask who I should speak to at his Cadillac store who can help me in what I want, a 2012 Cadillac Escalade ESV, Platinum Edition. Howard tells me to ask for Dennis Bala, Dennis is the new General Manager of the dealership. I drop in one night and in about 30 minutes I am ready to roll. Easy, pleasant and again a good experience…just keep away from Fusciardi!

So I thought…enter the picture “Cadillac VIP Service,“ the only thing different with “Cadillac VIP Service” and “pig crap”…let me think, there is none!!! I call Dennis Bala and tell him that I had not driven the 2012 Escalade and would like to drive one for a few days before I take delivery of mine. Dennis trying his best to make that happen tells me about “Cadillac VIP Service” and puts me in touch with Tony Fusciardi, “District Sales Manager.” Now I am thinking perfect, a Big Shot, a Wheel, email, tony.fusciardi@cadillac.com. So I get to speak to Tony and let me say this, speaking with Mr. Fusciardi was like talking to a semi-conscious street person, reason they too could not get me a 2012 Escalade to drive! The reason that Cadillac and GM went bankrupt to begin with is directly related to people with the mentality that Mr. Fusciardi has. I cannot imagine the misery of being a Cadillac dealer and having to deal with this nitwit. Fusciardi is Cadillac’s representative aka Mr. Cadillac and he can’t get me a 2012 Escalade to drive, worse yet, I am buying one!

It was Tony Fusciardi’s idea of “VIP Service” that almost had me driving a 2012 Range Rover. I get a call from Kristy Rubi who tells me she is with “Cadillac VIP Service” and can let me “drive a 2011 Escalade Hybrid”…what? Then she tells me that is all they got and the rest is for the “writers of automotive magazines”…LMAO, good see if they are buying a 2012? Why would “Cadillac VIP” offer a car that is almost a year old to a guy like me? It was almost like they were throwing me a bone, sure, like I was a member of some third world country and was getting my first taste of “one of dem fancy automobiles with dah fancy lights” I am buying a 2012 with a 6.2 gas engine, I am looking for “gusto”…Hybrid?

Tony Fusciardi tells me when I call and ask him what happened tells me, “maybe we should have done our homework better” in reference to dealing with me, Dah! He is the district manager and cannot get a 2012 for a BUYER to drive for awhile??? Dennis Bala and Hovik Khachekian did the hard work. My question is how did Mr. Fusciardi get this position? Cadillac Motor Division, wake up, the cream did not rise to top in your selection of Mr. Fusciardi for a “district manager,” not sure I would be sleeping well at night, Mr. District Manager could not get a car for a BUYER of his divisions product to drive….bottom line is this. Cadillac was once the “Standard of the World,” there is a possibility of that title coming back, someday, maybe. There is no such thing as “Cadillac VIP Service“ is total BULLSHIT. There is no “VIP” anything for working guys like me and many of my readers. Please don’t waste your time calling Tony Fusciardi, this guy couldn’t get you a donut at Winchell’s.

PS: when I told Mr. Fusciardi that I would be driving a 2012 Range Rover he could have cared less, sure this guy is perfect for the competition. VIP Service at Cadillac is just like “Yellow Carpet” service at the local used car lot, sure, stand right here and wait, someone will “piss” on you…Bravo, Mr. Fusciardi!!!

Jim McVicar and John

Jim McVicar and John

PPS: Upon purchasing my new Escalade I was given a course in its operation by Jim MacVicar, sales consultant. Jim was patient with me and gave of his time in showing me and my son all the gizmos and gadgets this car has. Jim has been in the car business for over 14 years and was a pleasure to deal with…maybe Jim could take Mr. Fusciardi’s place, Jim understands making a BUYER happy in their purchase of a Cadillac product, thanks Jim!
